Facial fillers, also known as dermal fillers, can help to plump thinning lips, give eyebrows a lift, enhance cheekbones, erase under eye circles and smooth smile lines.  Dermal fillers can be injected in less than an hour and require little to no downtime afterward. Once in a while, a person may have an irritant reaction to a dermal filler, but for most people, the worst that will happen is mild bruising, swelling, or redness where the filler was injected—all of which are temporary side effects.

Temporary is the key word when talking about the only other potential downside of facial fillers: they don’t last forever. Most fillers will last a year, however, there are some such as Sculptra that can last for 2-3 years, depending on where it is placed and how it’s used. That said, some procedures are good for as long as 18 months to 2 years.

The 6 most common types of facial fillers are as follows:

JUVEDERM: This filler typically lasts up to a year and is used most often to fill moderate and severe wrinkles on the face, commonly used to fill the lines that run from the nose to the mouth corners, but not typically the lips. Compared to other fillers, Juvederm is a smooth gel, which allows it to be malleable. Some variations of Juvederm also contain lidocaine which makes the injection process less painful. The lidocaine is used to numb the injection area. Optimal results are often accomplished after just one treatment, making it a very popular solution.

RESTYLANE: Restylane is very similar to Juvederm, and is used to fill moderate to severe wrinkles. It is also used as a lip plumper. It typically lasts from six to nine months, with some cases lasting up to a year depending on where on the face the gel is injected. The filler is not derived from animals, and is created in a laboratory setting.

PERLANE: Similar to Restylane, Perlane is often used to fill deeper wrinkles and for adding volume to the cheeks. This is a dense filler that has a heavier molecular weight. The particles not only are heavier, but they are larger in size which is what makes it so effective for use in deep wrinkles. This filler typically lasts up to six months.

EMERVEL:E – EMERVEL:E is a filler that can be used to fill facial lines, contouring and adding volume to the face. It can also be used as a lip enhancer. It comes in various levels of firmness depending on which variation of the filler is used. The size of the molecules varies for different injection locations. The filler can also be used with lidocaine to make the injection less painful.

SCULPTRA – Marketed as New-Fill in many countries, Sculptra is a poly-L-lactic-acid-based injectable dermal filler. It’s very effective when used as a treatment for wrinkles and fine lines on the face, and it can also be used to improve facial volume and treat lipoatrophy, which is the facial wasting, or loss of facial fat, most often associated with HIV and AIDS. In recent years, an off-label application for use in the buttocks (dubbed the “Sculptra Butt Lift”) has been explored with good results.

RADIESSE Radiesse is a non-toxic, non-allergenic filler that reduces the appearance of wrinkles and skin folds around the mouth and nose, and fills certain scars. It is injected through a small needle and placed under the skin. Immediately, this filler works to add volume under the skin and over time, the benefits of Radiesse continue by stimulating your body’s own natural collagen. The natural results have been shown to last a year or more in many patients, making the treatment results both immediate and long-lasting.
